TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -Dubai is known for being luxurious and lush. Tourists come from all around the world to Dubai, making it a busy and bustling part of the United Arab Emirates. However, despite its bright lights and lavish front, Dubai hides some free gems. Many tourist attractions in Dubai can be enjoyed for free.
Shahab Shayan, Director for Asia Pacific and Turkey at Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), recommends several free tourist destinations in Dubai.
1. Al Fahidi
"If you’re looking for free cultural tourism, the Al Fahidi historical neighborhood is a must-try," said Shahab, answering written questions from several journalists who visited Dubai in March 2024.
Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood was established by wealthy Persian textile and pearl merchants back in the 19th century. The neighborhood stood along the Dubai Creek, making it a prime spot for traders. The banks of the creek also house the famous souk or Dubai’s traditional markets.
2. Dubai Fountain
When in Dubai, visiting the Dubai Fountain Show at the Dubai Mall is a must. Every afternoon, the open area on the side of Dubai Mall facing the Burj Khalifa is filled with visitors awaiting the spectacular fountain show. The free Dubai staple lasts for half an hour from 6-11 p.m.
3. Hatta Mountain Bike Trail Center
Cyclists and outdoor lovers can explore the mountainous region of Hatta completely for free from the Hatta Mountain Bike Trail Center. The trail is open 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
Hatta is a small town on the outskirts of Dubai that borders directly with Oman. From downtown Dubai, you can reach Hatta in 1.5 to 2 hours by land. Aside from biking, you can also enjoy Hatta Kayak and Hatta Heritage Village.
4. Enjoying the Skyline at The Pointe
The Pointe is an iconic waterfront destination at the tip of Palm Jumeirah, a popular artificial land in Dubai. This place offers world-class dining, entertainment, and recreation. From here, tourists can enjoy the skyline with views of the luxurious Atlantis, The Palm Hotel, and the resort across from it.
5. Dubai Creek Harbour
Dubai Creek Harbour is the ideal district to take an afternoon stroll in Dubai. You can also see the panoramic Dubai Creek by visiting the Viewing Point, Dubai’s newest observation deck. This new structure is a 70-meter-long walkway that protrudes 26 meters above the water and is 11.65 meters high.
6. Al Qudra Lake
If you want to enjoy a desert safari experience, remember to stop by Al Qudra Lake. Located in the vast Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, this desert oasis is perfect to enjoy the stunning sunset over Dubai’s skyline. There are several lakes in the area named after their shapes, such as Love Lake, Moon Lake, and Expo Lake. If you want to stay overnight, don't forget to bring warm clothes because the temperature drops once it gets dark.
