Will Spotify ever become profitable? Despite dominating the music streaming industry, the company is struggling to make much money due to the high royalties it has to pay. Its gamble on podcasts hasn't paid off yet. However, like Amazon once did, can Spotify grow so big that it can negotiate better terms and eventually become a profitable behemoth? It will be interesting to follow how the company navigates the challenges ahead. https://lnkd.in/g7x6PTua#Spotify #MusicStreaming #Podcasts #Profitability

Rogan Renews Contract with Spotify for Multi-Year Deal - Why Does it Matter?Joe Rogan's podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE), has agreed to a multi-year extension with Spotify. The Wall Street Journal reports that the deal is worth around $250 million, and importantly allows JRE to expand its reach to YouTube.Spotify's initial exclusive deal with Rogan in 2020 proved successful, bringing in over $100 million and increasing podcast listening on the platform. Since the agreement, JRE has remained Spotify's most popular podcast. With YouTube distribution, JRE is set to grow even larger. YouTube is the best podcast discovery tool, with over 2 billion active users and the most robust advertising platform for creators. Podcasts that feature a video component are best distributed on YouTube, which is why the news about JRE's expansion is significant. This development will help showcase how successful podcast creators can be on YouTube.JRE is already a massive podcast, with over 10 million listeners per episode, at least four episodes weekly, and 2.5+ hour episodes with six host-read ad breaks. Based solely on its host-read ads, JRE generates an annual revenue of $345.6 million, assuming an estimated $30 CPM industry average for audio-only podcast advertising. All in all, both Spotify and Rogan benefit from the renegotiated deal, and Spotify has done an exceptional job working with the world's largest podcaster.✳ A Win for Rogan✳ A Win for Spotify✳ A Win for Fans (making the show more accessible)❇ And a Win for YouTube!https://lnkd.in/dErssH5h

https://lnkd.in/gaYtrUqa"TechCrunch LogoAppsSpotify is no longer just a streaming app, it’s a social networkSarah Perez8:41 AM PDT • July 10, 2024CommentSpotify screen shown an 2 smartphonesImage Credits: SpotifyWith Spotify’s recent launch of comments on podcasts, the streamer is taking yet another step toward building a social networking experience in an app primarily known for music. With comments, podcasters can now engage with their listeners directly within Spotify, as they can with other interactive features like Polls and Q&As. Combined with the app’s 2023 revamp, which added a TikTok-like discovery feed, artist profiles where creators can hawk merchandise and concert tickets, as well as the ability to post to stories, Spotify’s app is shaping up to be a social network centered around all things audio, not just a music-streaming app.Following this week’s added support for comments on podcast episode pages — a social networking feature if there ever was one — the question now is whether Spotify will add something similar for music artists in the future. This could be an even more compelling addition to the app, as the fanbases around musicians tend to be larger and more active than those around most podcasts."

Spotify is evolving into a social network for audio, beyond just music streaming. 🎶Podcasters can now engage with listeners directly through comments, alongside interactive features like Polls and Q&As. 📊 This follows the app’s 2023 revamp, which added a TikTok-like discovery feed, artist profiles for merchandise and concert tickets, and story posts. 📸Apple tried a similar approach with Ping in 2010, a social network for music that failed, and later with Connect, which also didn’t last. ❌Unlike Apple, Spotify hasn’t made bold declarations about building a social network but has gradually introduced features to make the app more social for creators and fans. 👥#socialmedia #musicstreaming #spotify #productinnovations #userengagement
