September 2014
I just realized that I will not have the same money I have when I will be on maternity leave and now I am wondering are there things I need to start buying or stocking up before I go on maternity leave? Any tips or suggestions? Diapers maybe? What do you think? Should I even start buying or not?

I am trying to get most things before I go on mat leave, each pay I pick something to buy or stock up on. Since Feb it's been crib, dresser, change table and now that we're closer I'll buy diapers if on sale, some clothes off Facebook or kijiji and a play mat was this last pay. I figure it's going to be tight on mat leave even with a 6 week top up so if I have a good start there is less to buy once baby comes. The rest I am hoping for at my shower :)
Last time before I started may leave we had the majority of clothes required until aged 1, 2 boxes breast pads, 2 huge packs of thick pads, 1 box newborn diapers, 1 box size 1, 2 boxes size 2, 2 boxes size 3 and 1 box size 4. (Careful with diapers that toy keep the receipt because depending on shape of babies bum not alk diapers work!). We had all major purchases done (high chair for when starting to feed etc. ..). Also had 2 boxes of Costco wipes. We also had a few things of soap as well was lotions and vaseline for bum. Can't really remember what else though lol.
I'm starting to stock pile now. But last time I didn't I had clothes and large items but someone told me not to stick pile as u never know what reaction baby will have or size they r. That being said my daughter was allergic to a few kinds of wipes and soap. This time I'm just gonna buy same stuff I got with my daughter thinking the baby will inherit my skin too.

I honestly would take the time to stock up your freezer! It's much easier to dash out and grab diapers or wipes than it is to dash out grab supper and cook. Plus diapers etc ALWAYS come on sale, just look in the flyers!
In the long run stocking up the freezer will save you a bunch of cash! I found with our first, after OH a full day of work and me a full day with baby we were both far too tired to cook and we cheated and got take out.
I even stocked up well with LOTS of freezer to crockpot meals!Running out and getting groceries everyday or buying take out adds up very quickly and will eat right into your $$$. Just a bit of my experience :) Costco was my best friend and filled my freezer.
Pajamas, sports bras, a new pillow for your bed to make the most of the little sleep you will be getting :P
For the house I second making some freezer meals. Being able to heat up a bowl of home made soup might be the difference between sanity and insanity four months from now.
Other than that, toilet paper and wipes.
Also I beleive most people get universal child care benefits and child tax benefit on top of the mat leave when I had my son I was making 1600$/ month and I had previously been working at mcds part time so it all adds up. Right now I receive 550$/month although 150$ of that is a specail needs supplement so id be receiving 400$/month If my son did not have CP and im a stay at home mom :) so yeah those benefits are meant to cover the constant costs of diapers, clothes etc. Just buy all the furniture and one time purchases before mat leave and you should be set
Someone had a great suggestion a few weeks ago about buying gift cards or putting money aside to help offset the drop in pay during mat leave.
I'm not huge on gifts but I guess if anyone is going to insist I'll ask for gift cards to places like superstore (& costco, if they have?).
Have clothes until 6 months and new born and size one diapers, but dont stockile too much as your baby might grow out of a size very quickly or have a skin reaction to certain diapers or wipes. Same with baby soaps, creams and laundry detergent.
Stockile freezer meals if you can, especially easy croc pot meals bc you will not have energy for shopping and cooking and you will end u spending uneccessary money on take out.
